If you know anything about the USAA company, you know that they help out military families in the country, so it is often not the case that you see them getting into some sort of legal fight. But this one’s kinda necessary, and that’s why you should get to know a little more about this USAA Patent Infringement Lawsuit. For those who have no idea about what is going on, well, USAA is suing a bank in the country that goes by the name Regions Bank. But why? Oh, you see, it has something to do with a technology that USAA had already patented, but the bank was found using their technology without any permission or anything like that.
Technically, it is suing the bank for the unauthorized use of the specific technology that USAA has developed and patented. This case surfaced just this year in January 2025, and this case specifically was filed in a court in Eastern Texas. Let’s just go over the details and try to figure out what is going on and things like that.
Okay, But What’s This Technology All About?
Well, the technology the USAA company is suing the Bank for is called Remote Deposit Capture, or RDC for short. Okay, but what is it? Well, to be honest, it really is a super useful technology where a bank customer can just take a picture of a check using their phone and deposit it into a bank account without even needing to visit a physical bank branch. Like, that’s super useful, convenient, and kinda innovative if you think about it for a sec.
Though, it isn’t a new technology at all, USAA has been working on this since the early 2000s, so that the military people don’t have any problem depositing checks when they are overseas. To be specific here, it was actually in 2009 when they officially launched this technology, and talking about the current situation, they have more than 130 patents related to this particular technology alone.
USAA Has Been Fighting This Battle for Years
See, it could be that you heard of this case for the very first time, but just know that this has been going on for over a decade now. A decade? Oh yes, you see, to develop this technology, they first worked with a company called Mitek, but they had some disagreement back in 2014, so they took a different route. When they officially launched their version of this technology, back in 2017 they even went on to send official letters to about 100 banks, you know, just warning them not to use this tech if they do not have the license or permission to do so.
And then a lot of lawsuits started rolling in. Like, in 2019 and 2020, you’d remember that USAA first sued Wells Fargo and won more than $300 million in that case. Then in 2022, they sued PNC Bank and won $218.5 million. And now they’re suing the Regions Bank, and the chances of them winning this are also super high. Though this case is still going, and there is no conclusion or settlement yet, but worry not, we’ll keep you posted.
