Recently, this new process of certification of elections in Georgia has been pretty much one of the biggest talks about how the elections should be conducted in the nation. And yes, we’re talking about the Georgia Election Certification Rule Lawsuit. Here’s how it works holding elections, a local board goes through all the results, checks everything properly, and approves them. Simple? Well, there are some new rules that have made it more, you know, a bit complicated. So, what’s the “NEW” about it? The Georgia State Election Board under Republican rule has taken some significant steps in modifying work operations. This includes requiring all “ballots to be hand-counted on Election Day” and establishing stringent regulations for poll watchers, you know?
Just so you know though, also included are several more video cameras on ballot drop boxes as well as photo identification before dropping absentee ballots for other people. Critics have countered that it was rushed, confused a lot of people, and was an error-making machine.
What’s All That Courtroom Drama About?
You see, this time, sorting through the courtroom drama turned out to be the focus of the judges. You know, first up was Judge Robert McBurney, who ruled that the local election boards had no way out of certifying election results. Not even if something felt fishy, you know? No certification wouldn’t cut it. Why? Because not doing so might muffle the voices of voters out there. He also placed a hold on the hand-counting mandate, citing its possibilities of rendering elections a nightmarish chaos.
And then came Judge Thomas Cox Jr., who came down even harder. He uprooted several such new regulations, which he called unconstitutional. According to him, the State Election Board had crossed its line under Georgia law and under the United States Constitution. Sure enough, it permanently struck down the counting-by-hand rule and also axed other changes such as stricter poll watcher rules and increased surveillance at drop boxes. Keep in mind though, for the contestants of such rules, it was a major victory.
Everyone’s Got an Opinion, You Know?
You see, considering the fact that each of the court ruling decisions was reflected upon and that all kinds of voices had been raised including reactions made by members of both political parties notably the Democrats, you know? But what was it exactly? Well, just so you know, the Democratic party rallied local policymakers saying they were unfairly targeted, and secondary to the new voting bill which was too complicated. Not just that though, even the Georgia Republican Secretary of State and Attorney General maintained a distance from the newly introduced regulations despite them being prominent figures in the Republican party, you know? We then had among the Republicans some arguing that these changes were about keeping elections secure and trustworthy.
Why Does It Matter At All?
Sure enough, this is not just a Georgia issue, the whole court battle is about more than that. As anyone with slight common sense can tell, certifying the results makes it fair and gives legitimacy to the system, as every vote is now counted, you know? Not just that though, when local offices of the government get suspicious of the process or even refuse to certify, it can result in complete chaos and a loss of public trust. All we want to say is that keep in mind that these are crucial judgments, as they make the world see that what the law really is, is a protector of the truth and honesty.
Once again, this is yet another episode of the Georgia-based friction that has been occurring between provisions of an election and a fair one that is possible for everyone, and that is precisely why it matters to literally everyone in the country.
