Just this year, we got to see a weird but true case regarding IVF treatments in the country which has now resulted in a lawsuit. Yes, we’re referring to the Coastal Fertility Lawsuit. What really happened? Oh, well, can you even imagine a mother giving birth to a baby, and then finding out that the baby isn’t actually yours genetically? That’s the same situation that happened with Krystena Murray, a woman who lives down there in Savannah, Georgia. Just like so many people out there, she also went to an IVF centre because she had been dreaming of becoming a month for a long time now, so what she did was choose a sperm donor who looked a lot like her, you know, white, dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. She thought that the treatment went well, and it was actually back on December 29, 2023, when she gave birth to a baby. But right away, she knew that something wasn’t right, like the baby boy she birthed wasn’t blond and white with blue eyes, nah, it was a Black baby.
Sure, since she was the one to birth this baby, she loved him, cared for him, breastfed him and did whatever she could as a mother, you know? But deep down she knew that this wasn’t her baby, she chose a different donor, so she decided to take a DNA test back in January 2024, and the results? Oh, that confirmed her doubt, the baby wasn’t hers, instead all this time, she was carrying and raising a baby that belonged to another couple.
The Moment Everything Fell Apart
Well, right after this DNA test, Krystena Murray actually went on to contact the fertility clinic that goes by the name of Coastal Fertility Specialists and told them about whatever was going on. Though, the clinic then reached out to the actual biological parents of the baby, and you know what they did? The biological parents? Oh, they straight up went down the legal path to get custody of the child based on the DNA results.
This all was an official lawsuit by March 2024 against Krystena Murray, and of course, she had to return the baby. Sure, she fought to keep him because of her motherly love, but her case wasn’t strong enough, so she had no choice.
The Lawsuit Against the Fertility Clinic
Like, what did you expect Krystena Murray to do? One day she walked into the court with the baby she birthed and loved so much, and walked out empty-handed. So sure enough, she went on to file a legal case against the fertility clinic and said that it was their negligence and no one else’s fault.
It turned into a full-fledged lawsuit in February 2025, making allegations against the clinic as well as Dr. Jeffrey Gray, the lab director, because they were the ones responsible for this devastating mistake.
As per the details that are already out, so far we know that the lawsuit demands a jury trial, with Krystena Murray seeking $75,000 in damages, plus additional compensation for medical expenses and emotional trauma that she went through all this time.
