Pokémon Company Pocket Monster Remake Lawsuit

We all know that The Pokémon Company is a big one in the entire world, and when you see them going after a game developer for just a mobile game, you might think they’re being the bully here, right? But that’s not actually true. How? Oh well, for that, you must get to know about the full story here because with just little facts and headlines, you shouldn’t judge anyone, and that’s the case with The Pokémon Company.

Like, in this Pokémon Company Pocket Monster Remake Lawsuit, we’re actually seeing them taking a game developer to court, but for what? Well, just a few years ago, there was this game launched by a developer, and the name of the game was Pocket Monster: Remake. Yes, a remake that is. If you have looked at the game or even played it, you’d certainly have realised that it is an outright rip-off of the original Pokemon game.

This new remake game copied literally everything, the game mechanics, the characters, the designs and literally everything while just making slight modifications.

And yes, it is true that this game became kinda super famous really quickly, and for years, the game made millions of dollars by just existing as a remake or total rip-off of the original game. So sure enough, seeing this, The Pokémon Company had to do something about it, so they took this matter to court back in 2021, and that’s precisely why we’re seeing this  Pokémon Company Pocket Monster Remake Lawsuit in action.

Did This New Remake Game Really Cross The Line?

Well, after reading this far, do you still consider the Pocket Monster: Remake as just an inspired game by the original one? Nah, that’s not the case! This new remake game didn’t even try to be some unique thing, like they even straight-up copied the characters. So no wonder why the developer of this game had to face some legal issues because of that, and now they’re paying for it too.

As per the details that are already out, you see, the companies behind the game, Guangzhou Maichi Network Technology and Khorgos Fangchi Network Technology made a ton of money from it. A ton of money? How much are we talking about here? Well, just to give you a good idea, you see, in just one year, the game pulled in $42 million.

How the Lawsuit Played Out

Sure enough, after hearing the arguments, the court had to favour The Pokemon Company, and that’s what really happened. After all, they’re the original creators, right? So, the developers of the fake aka remake game, were ordered to pay 107 million yuan (about $15 million USD) in damages. But keep in mind, initially, The Pokemon Company wanted almost $72.5 million in damages, but that actually didn’t really work. The last hearing happened back in December 2024, and that’s when we saw both parties settle down with the agreement and settlement amount, and that was the end of this case.
