For those who don’t know yet what this Amber Thurman Lawsuit is all about, well, just know that Amber Thurman was only twenty-eight years of age, a young mother from Georgia, you know, who had high expectations for her family. She was all about her six-year-old son Messiah and worked hard to ensure a better future for both, a really strong mother. She really wanted to be a nurse; it was something that she hoped to accomplish. But life threw a curveball at her when she discovered she was pregnant with twins in the summer of 2022.
Stressed out by how everything would fit, Amber took the difficult decision to abort. Her family rallied around her and she therefore went for abortion pills. Sure enough, it was a tough decision, but one she really felt she had to take.
Then things went very wrong.
What Really Happened?
Well, as per the case details that are already out, you see, the pills did not perform their functions correctly. And sure enough, as a result, some fetal tissue remained in her body and caused a severe infection. Later down the line, Amber was taken to Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia, where she underwent a standard surgical procedure called D&C (dilation and curettage) for tissue removal. Without a single doubt, she was critically ill and required quick assistance.
However, instead of helping her out, the doctors did not operate on her for almost 19 hours. Nineteen hours!!! At the time Amber finally made it to the operating table on August 19, 2022, it was all too late. She did not survive, unfortunately. Her death certificate later confirmed what her family had already feared, the life of their kin had been cut short by septic shock from retained or remaining fetal tissue.
Could This Have Been Prevented?
Preventable? Maybe Yes? At that point, they made it much more tragic, but how? Well, you see, state investigations established that had Amber been operated on sooner, she probably would have survived.
But what’s wrong with them taking it fast? It gets a little bit confusing and frustrating. A tough ban on abortion had recently come into being that made it illegal to carry out the procedure under very specific circumstances in Georgia. And sure enough, Amber’s case technically fell under exceptions but was hesitated by the doctor. Why? No fear of legal backlash, that’s all!
Amber serves as a reminder of the painful consequences to patients of laws that impose limits on what medical professionals can do, you know? That window of hesitation is believed by the family to be the difference between life and death. And it literally took the life of Amber Thurman.
A Family’s Fight for Justice
No, Amber’s family will not let this go, and why should they? That is not an option. They’ve partnered with civil rights legend Ben Crump, you might have heard the name before. He has taken on some of the biggest cases in recent history and is now helping Amber’s family take the hospital accountability for what they did to Amber.
Sure enough, Piedmont Henry Hospital is accused of negligence in this lawsuit against medical practitioners. Like, to put it simply, they did not act while Amber’s life was at stake. According to Crump, the delays were made as a result of the fear of Georgia abortion laws such that a dangerous environment was created for patients, like Amber.
Of all who have spoken publicly regarding this raw pain of having lost a loved one, Amber’s mother, Shanette, and sister, Cjauna, have said so: Amber was their “sunshine,” not just a headline. She was the mother of Messiah, a young woman still filled with dreams and love in her heart for her family.
